Communication can be performed using your:
Turn on while driving, flash the the high beams to communicate your presence.
Activate early to warn of upcoming turns or lane changes.
Be careful not to confuse other drivers
Activate to warn of risk or abnormal situations
Tap the brake pedal before applying the brakes to help communicate that you will soon be slowing down
Tap to attract other road users attention
To warn of intentions and communicate right of way
Maintain a 2 second rule (3 seconds for novice drivers) for your following distance. Increase when driving in non-ideal conditions or behind large trucks or motorcycle.
Keep an “out” to the sides in the traffic in case emergency evasive manoeuvres are required
When stopping behind another vehicle, leave enough room that you can see the rear tires touching the roadway over the top of the hood line.
This space will allow you to change lanes if lane is blocked due to a vehicle stall to avoid being backed up into if the car is parked on an uphill to allow the vehicle ahead room to reverse if necessary.
Always remember that the right of way is something that must be given to you. The law specifies who must yield to whom, not who has the right-of-way.
When in doubt, extend courtesy and yield to the other vehicle in a conflict.
Manoeuvres / APE
Each manoeuvres should be performed using the APE (Assess, Prepare, Execute) system.
Scan situation, and decide whether to perform the manoeuvre
Once decided, signal your intentions and re-check mirrors and blind spot before proceeding
Perform the manoeuvre
Check ahead in your lane as well as the lane you want to enter
Is the manoeuvre permitted?
Check mirrors and blind spot
Signal your intention by activating your signal light
Recheck traffic ahead
Recheck mirrors and blind spot
Aim high at the centre of the lane you want to go to
Adjust speed (accelerate if the traffic allows it)
Steer gently into the lane
Centre vehicle in the lane by aiming far ahead
Readjust your speed to the same as traffic
When changing lanes on a multi-lane roadway, be sure to check the entire road way for vehicles/hazards
Most collisions involving pedestrians, motorcycles or bicycles with motorized vehicles occur in intersections.
Scan the intersection to identify the situation
Each type of intersection (controlled, partially controlled or uncontrolled) each present different levels of danger
If you are not required to stop, ease off the accelerator, cover the brake, and scan the intersection in all directions before entering
Pay special attention to any pedestrians, especially children, those with disabilities, or senior citizens
Yield to any vehicle or pedestrian already in the intersection
Do not enter the intersection unless you can cross it completely.
When required to stop, tap the brake, check the rear-view mirror, and then apply the brake to come to a full stop.
Be sure to stop at the stop line/crosswalk/edge of the crossroad
At A Traffic Light
Wait for the green signal then check left, centre, right and left again before entering the intersection.
At A Stop Sign Come to a full stop and then check left, centre, right and centre again before entering the intersection.
